This is one of the very few Mercedes that you can drive without coming off as being a status-conscious dick. It’s quite a handsome looking car in the same vein as a Volvo 240, with its plain, bold lines, but it’s complemented by an almost gaudy grill, chrome detailing, and slightly foppish wheels. But, of course, the best part of it is that it’s a diesel wagon. And we all know that’s a potent combination of good mileage, reliability, practicality, and, of course, hipster-chic.
This W123 generation of MBs is lauded for its reliability. These things are used as taxis in parts of Africa, and regularly put over a million miles on the odometer. Since they made so many of them, parts are cheap and easy to find, which means repairs (which would probably be minimal) wouldn’t be too much of a hassle. Really, the only bad thing about these is that they don’t have an LS3 in the front. Yeah, they’re slow. Painfully slow. The kind of slow where overtaking has you break out into cold sweats and or hives, and makes you feel like you’re Keanu Reeves in that movie Speed . Except you’re probably going a lot slower than 50 mph, and your face probably isn’t inches away from experiencing severe road rash.
I think the reason I like these so much is that they’re a bit classier version of a station wagon without being gaudy or in-your-face or a status-symbol or soccer-mom. They’re just, you know, nice . They’ve got character.

Incredibly true. Too bad they're not like this anymore.

The 300TD is a rocketship compared to the 200D, though.
Oh, and that colour car with those coloured wheels looks awesome.

80+ they had turbos and can be fairly quick if you have them in tune. Adjust valves, turn up the ALDA, clean out the vac lines to the ALDA, boom

From when Mercedes built cars to a standard and not to a price.

I LOVE the colour on her, but for some reason the colour-matched wheels on these models doesn't really do it for me.
To each his own though!

Mine was Ivory (as about 90% of them are it seems) with matching wheels of course, my fav color is red/maroon but for some reason every time I see one on ebay the red ones are rusted to hell.
